We may have to wait until 2017 to see the Power Rangers back in action, but the upcoming movie’s first look is already here. The 90’s Saturday morning TV staple Power Rangers is getting its own cinematic reboot and Entertainment Weekly has provided a first look at the new team.
The first still shows pop star Becky G, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, and Dacre Montgomery as Trini, Billy, Kimberly, Zack and Jason, respectively.
Director Dean Israelite said that this reboot is absolutely intended as an updated reflection of the current teen experience, as a coming-of-age story for the disenfranchised and disparate.
He stated that from the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process, adding “We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”
The Rangers’ suits will also be getting an update, thanks to Weta Workshop of Lord of the Rings fame, who fabricated the costumes. Israelite wanted the costume to be immediately recognisable as belonging to the Power Rangers, while give them a “really modern, edgy, badass, aspirational quality.”
The film also has Elizabeth Banks as villain Rita Repulsa and as per Israelite, it’s very exciting. He noted that Banks “loves the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character.”
