The third installment in the popular sci-fi series Riddick is back with Vin Diesel in the lead, doing what he does best, play the anti-hero. But the film has done a lot more for itself than just entertain, Riddick has broken the international box office beating The Butler at his own game.
This was The Butler's fourth box office weekend and after having reigned on top of the charts for three weeks, the film fell to second place at Riddick's hands which earned a secure $18.7 million in its opening weekend.
"I don't think there were any mistakes made here," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, which returned to the fold to distribute Riddick in North America. "Vin wanted to do it. He had to do it on his time. He was very, very busy with Fast & Furious, and I think everything came together as he wanted it to come together," reports WSJ.
"Typically, the weekend after Labor Day is one of the slowest weekends of the year," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "By Universal releasing a brand-new sci-fi movie with one of the biggest stars in the world, they took advantage of that and came out on top with the No. 1 movie. It gave the weekend a nice boost."
The Spanish-language comedy Instructions Not Included earned third place in its second weekend with 8.1 million dollars, while Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis starrer adult comedy We're the Millers came fourth with 7.9 million dollars.
The fifth spot was claimed by Disney's animated film Planes (which stars Priyanka Chopra), a spin-off from Pixar's Cars franchise which took 4.37 million dollars.
