Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow

Hollywood actor-singer Scarlett Johansson was known more for low-key performances in films such as Lost in Translation and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but her introduction as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Black Widow (below) in Iron Man 2 brought the big change in her career.

And now, Johansson is bagging acclaim again for her mercenary role in the recently-released film, The Avengers. “In this film, Joss Whedon (the director) and I talked about her past. Who is she? How does she get to be a mercenary? We both wanted to see the darker side of her — why did she have to learn those skills?” says the 27-year-old.

ScarJo, as she is popularly known, had to master “Wushu style of fighting)” and also the Russian language for her part. “I had two days, so I had to learn it phonetically. We hired this great Russian translator, and she worked with the dialogue coach,” she says.

The actor also has a penchant for playing with her hair colour in her movie roles. Ask her if she enjoyed being a redhead for this one, she says, “It’s nice because it allows me to go a bit under the radar... I’m always happy when I do it because it’s the first step of the process of finding the character again. To me more than anything, the hair colour represents a huge piece of work that we dive head first into.”
