Notice the golden hardware on Spidey’s suit? The device that is used by Peter Parker to shoot webs while on the prowl as the web-slinging superhero in the promos of The Amazing Spider-Man: The Untold Story? Director Marc Webb has gone back to the traditional comic-book portrayal of the web-shooters which often run out of fluid when Spidey needs it the most — the shooters that Tobey Maguire missed in his trilogy last decade.
Built by the young, inventive Parker, these web-shooters are way different from the Maguire series, which restricted them as an ‘organic mutation’ that was part of his abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider.
“We wanted to base the movie in a very contemporary and less stylised universe … the mechanical web-shooters are what’s there in the comics. We wanted to use that. It’s one way that we dramatise Peter Parker’s abilities,” Webb told us over phone from LA.
“He is a science guy and that’s how he makes his web-shooters that help him. That’s something that we picked up from Stan Lee, the original writer of Spider-Man.”
The movie hits screens here on June 29, four days before its US release. This is not the first time that the superhero’s use of the device will be shown on screen. A 1977 TV film followed by a two-season TV series, also titled The Amazing Spider-Man, showed him wearing a web-shooting device and a utility belt.
