Finally, it is here. The long-awaited teaser trailer (director JJ Abrams insists we treat this as a
have been released and it has the perfect mix of old and new faces, old and new themes.
Those returning are Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, while John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac make up for those who have just entered this much-loved franchise. The teaser went viral and has got over 16.6 million views in about 15 hours.
The events of the trailer take place 30 years after Star Wars: The Return of Jedi. When we last met them, Darth Vader had died in a bid to save his son Luke Skywalker from force lightning. This last act worked as his redemption and he returned from the dark side to become Anakin Skywalker again.
The trailer begins with Luke intoning, "The Force is strong in my family. My father has it (so, Darth Vader isn't really dead, is he?), I have it, my sister has it and you have it." The voiceover is accompanied by the visuals of a mangled helmut that belonged to Darth Vader, the withered hand of everybody's favourite R2-D2 and probably the hand of Princess Leia who seems to be accepting a light saber.
It is followed by visuals of stormtroopers, gravity-defying chases and an action-filled introduction to the new members of the cast.
The trailer, however, saves the best for the last. We meet Han Solo (Harrison Ford) on the Falcon with Chewbacca by his side. "Chewie, we are home," he says with obvious satisfaction.
And satisfaction is what the Star Wars' fanboys and fangirls also seem to be feeling. This Christmas, may the force be with you!
The film also stars Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anders, Warwick Davis, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, and Max von Sydow. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18.
