The original novel behind satirical gung-ho 1997 sci-fi Starship Troopers is set to become the basis for another franchise outing, according to a new dispatch.
The scriptwriters behind Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s Baywatch, and producers associated with both Fast & Furious and the Total Recall remake are on the new Starship Troopers project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sci-fi novelist Robert A Heinlein wrote the 1959 story in which a freshly minted soldier, Johnnie Rico, rises up the ranks in a war against giant alien bugs.
Film director Paul Verhoeven chose to interpret it as a satire for his 1997 film which spawned three home movie sequels for Sony Pictures Entertainment or subsidiary studios.
But an “an all-new take” is now expected from Sony studio Columbia Pictures.
