With a huge international debut last weekend, The Avengers held its grip on the box office as the No. 1 hit around the world, adding another $151.5 million to last week's tally and raising the bar on blockbusters.
In just 12 days, The Avengers totaled $441.5 million internationally with strong openings in Russia ($17.9 million), China ($17.4), while in North America it was the biggest opening of all time with $200.3 million this weekend, beating the $169.1 million won by The Avengerslows, Part 2.
Other record-breaking openings were in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and other Asian and Latin American markets.
The Marvel action adventure has collected $641.8 million worldwide. Outside the US, The Avengers's biggest single market is the UK where the comic book action picture has made an impressive $48.1 million.
The blockbuster assembled an all-star cast of superheroes with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo, (The Hulk), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Tom Hiddleston as the villain Loki.
Directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) it is 2012's biggest movie so far, overcoming Titanic 3D, Battleship and The Hunger Games, as well as the Marvel films Iron Man and Thor. The Avengers earned a rare perfect A+ from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore.
At No. 2 this weekend was American Pie: Reunion, drawing $34 million from 49 territories. The latest sequel in the raunchy comedy series opened in the UK and France and took first place in Italy, Spain and Belgium.
Battleship dropped to No. 3, earning $11 million in 52 markets. The sci-fi action film with Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Rihanna has reached $200 million internationally with a North American release to come May 18.
Rising to No. 4, The Lucky One collected $5.5 million from 27 territories. The romantic drama starring Zac Efron and Blythe Danner ranked in third place with a UK debut.
Finishing in fifth place, The Hunger Games grabbed another $4.3 million. The teen action film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson has earned a worldwide total of $617.7 million.
