Actor Tom Cruise has confessed to being ‘deeply saddened’ by the news of his wife of five years, Katie Holmes, filing for divorce on Thursday.
Holmes’ attorney, Jonathan Wolfe had confirmed the breakup of one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples on Friday to a magazine, saying, “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
“Kate has filed for divorce, and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” Cruise’s spokeswoman, Amanda Lundberg, said in a statement. “Please allow them their privacy to work this out,” it adds.
The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri, who has remained in news nearly as much as her parents. Cruise, who turns 50 on Tuesday, wed Holmes, 33, in a storybook Italian castle in 2006 after declaring his love for the former Dawson’s Creek star live on Oprah — infamously hopping on a couch on the show.
Having been previously married to Nicole Kidman, and Mimi Rogers, this will be Cruise’s third divorce.
‘Irreconcilable differences’ has been cited as the reason for the split. While Holmes is seeking sole custody of their daughter, reports add that she is to get $3 million (Rs 16.5 crore) for every year of the marriage plus ownership of a California mansion in settlement.
June, the month of seperation
The news of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ divorce comes just a week after actor Johnny Depp called it quits with French singer-actor Vanessa Paradis. The
couple had been together for nearly 14 years but never married. Depp is set to give over 100 million pounds to Paradis, in one of the biggest pay-offs for an unmarried alliance.
