After Harry Potter and Twilight, a new series titled The Hunger Games, based on a book by the same name, is making waves abroad. Liam Hemsworth, who is currently dating Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus, says he’s happy to be cast in a sci-fi thriller and would like to act more. The duo watched the premiere of the film together and Liam admits that Miley liked it. He adds that both are fascinated by India and that he would “love to come to see the Taj Mahal with Miley”.
Liam, who plays the character of Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games, adds that the trilogy can’t be compared with the Twilight saga. He says, “I loved the story of Twilight and its genre. It was a new concept and I like Edward’s character. But our story is completely different. There is zero resemblance.”
The actor admits he didn’t want to read the books until he heard that they were being adapted into films. He says, “And when I read them, I fell in love with them.”
Most of Liam’s character’s scenes are with Jennifer Lawrence who plays his love interest Katniss. He adds, “Gale and Katniss grew up together, so they really bond. They meet for the woods while they’re hunting and trying to provide for their families.”
And did he have to do a lot of stunts? Liam says, “We live in very hard times in the movie. Yet I didn’t have to do many stunts. But I did train for a few weeks before we started shooting to lose weight and was eating a lot less. I had to look hungry and feel what hunger does to your brain.”
Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the second and third installments, are slated to follow next.
What’s the plot?
Based on the first novel in the The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins, the story revolves around an annual event in which a boy and a girl between the age group of 12 to 18 are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle. Only one person can survive. The film releases in India this Friday.
