So what will the world be like without Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine? Maybe you’ve thought about it or maybe you haven’t but Conan O’Brien has it covered. He’s putting together rigorous auditions for the iconic superhero before it’s too late. Check it out. And you're welcome.
And what a shortlist he’s assembled: Thomas Middleditch, Patton Oswalt, Nick Offerman, Michael Sheen, Hannibal Buress, Larry King and Betty White. Not what you might expect, but in the spirit of all things Comic-Con, perfect. Each of them give their best versions of Wolverine’s famous catchphrase: I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn’t very nice. After seeing Middleditch do his neurotic best, we realize this is the closest we’ll ever come to seeing a Woody Allen inspired Wolverine.

What with Hannibal Buress’ Chris Rock style screaming, Patton Oswalt’s musical theatricality, Nick Offerman’s deadpan, Larry King’s utterly bemused expression (Larry King is so old that when the big bang happened he did a double take), Martin Sheen’s Sean Connery impression, Kristen Schaal arriving fully prepared (for the wrong movie) and Betty White showing her real claws; Hugh Jackman better watch his back.
But let’s keep the shenanigans aside for a moment, fellow geeks, and mourn the end of an era. Hugh Jackman’s name has been synonymous with Logan’s for over a decade. Not only did the Australian become a star after X-Men, he genuinely seems to love playing the character, returning to it frequently and always delivering a committed performance.
But when the day finally comes, and Jackman hangs up his claws, be sure that Fox wastes no time in finding a replacement and staging a swift reboot, with us grappling at every tiny nugget of information, from images from the set to amped-up Comic-Con panels, until the movie arrives. Like the folks watching The Truman Show, all we need is further distraction.X-Men: Apocalypse is due to arrive next year and the third solo Wolverine movie the year after that. And if we’re lucky, we might get a cameo in Deadpool.
Wolverine then and now
