Although the superhero film slipped into second place at the US box office, it continued to dominate theaters globally, according to Rentrak.
In terms of total revenues to date, the second film in the new Spider-Man franchise now claims $550.9 million, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2014, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($695 million) and ahead of Rio 2 ($425 million).
At the US box office, the success of Neighbors had an impact on the superhero movie's revenues, however. The frat-house comedy took in $51 million at the domestic box office, compared to $37 million for Spider-Man.
After rising into second place over the previous weekend, The Other Woman slipped back into third at the global box office. The comedy starring Cameron Diaz earned $22 million in 61 territories. Rio 2 fell into fourth place with $19 million.
