Luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday launched the GL 63 AMG sports utility vehicle (SUV) in India priced at Rs. 1.66 crore (ex-showroom Mumbai).
This is the fourth model launched by the German car maker in India in 2014, after the new generation S-Class, which was launched in January, followed by the C-Class grand edition and the ML500 Guard edition.
“The GL 63 AMG is the most powerful SUV that is available now in India. This niche market of high-end and high-performance cars is growing and we think this product is a very competitive offering to the market,” said Eberhard Kern, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

At present, the GL 63 AMG doesn’t have a rival product from BMW and Audi. Its direct competitors are Range Rover Sport 5.0 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. While the Range Rover is priced at par with the GL 63 , the Porsche is much more expensive at Rs. 2.1 crore.
The GL 63 AMG is powered by a bi-turbo V8 5.5 litre engine, which develops a peak output of 410kW and 760Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and the company claims this SUV can go from 0-100 kilometers per hour in just 4.9 seconds.
The SUV will be sold in India as a completely built unit and will come with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty, Kern said.
Mercedes has plans to launch six more products in India this year, said Kern. It’s efforts to boost product lineup comes amid stiff competition from arch rival Audi.
