Nano sales not up to initial expectations - Slym

Tata Motors Managing Director Karl Slym  today accepted that the sales of its much hyped 'one lakh rupee' car Nano was below the initial expectations.

He also categorically said the company was not going to start new Nano plants in West Bengal or any other place in the country.

Talking to newsmen here on the occasion of the launch of 2 millionth truck from Tata Motors Jamshedpur plant, Slym said, " Our current Nano sales figure was around 5000 a month. So we can't say its sales has gone down but its true that it just could not reach the initial expectations. "

He also said the diesel and CNG versions of the car were also in the pipeline. Slym, however, denied any new Nano plant venture in West Bengal or any other place. " We have our plant in Sanand in Gujrat and that's the only one we are going to have for now, " he said.

To a query, the MD said his company would spend around Rs 3000 crore for the research and development work in the current fiscal of which slightly more than half would be for commercial vehicle segment.

He also accepted that the company could not bring a new version of vehicle in passenger segment since long.
