Despite the growing relevance and awareness of the discipline in recent times with increasing violence against women in public and private spaces, there are a large number of myths associated with women’s studies.  Here are some common ones.

1 In an environment where engineering and management are sought-after courses, there is a perception that opting for women’s studies may be the last resort after a chance to pursue these or any of the core disciplines in social sciences like sociology, history and political science have been lost. On the contrary, women’s studies or gender studies in most universities are not only difficult to enter in terms of admission processes, these courses also require academic rigour and time to complete successfully.

2 Anybody who has a critical mind and would like to understand society from a gender perspective should consider studying women’s studies. Many people think that it is a ‘soft’ discipline, only appropriate for women. The exposure and experience to women’s studies is not like just studying a subject in a disengaged manner, it makes you think about yourself and society in a self-reflexive manner.

3 Unlike common perception, women’s studies is not restricted to studies of sexuality and violence. Individuals opting for a women’s studies course need not necessarily be women.
