This university attracts students from all over the country as well as overseas and has a distinction of offering education from nursery school to doctoral level.
With English, Hindi as well as Urdu as the mediums of instruction, the university boasts of nine faculties, 39 departments and 27 research centres with over 19,000 students on the rolls. In order to keep pace with the needs of modern professions and global changes, the curricula are moderated regularly to incorporate the needful changes.
Apart from nine different faculties, Jamia also houses many centres, which include AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, FTK-Centre for Information Technology, Dr Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies and the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy of Third World Studies.
Other centres include magement studies, distance and open learning, study of comparative religions and civilizations, Jawaharlal Nehru studies centre for west Asian studies and many more.
The university allows credit transfers for postgraduate level students belonging to the faculty of social sciences, faculty of humanities and social sciences centres (for culture, media and governance and Nelson Mandela centre for peace and conflict resolution). They can opt for courses outside their parent departments under the credit transfer scheme.
All MA programmes offered by the faculties have a minimum total credit value of 64. Of these, eight credits may be earned from outside the parent department, through credit transfers, if a student so desires. Not more than one paper may be offered from outside the department in any one semester.
“Besides academics, my department has always encouraged participation in extra-curricular activities and a number of cultural festivals and academic seminars are routinely conducted here,” Saumya Kulshreshtha, MA English student.
“One doesn’t have to score 90% to get admission in JMI, you can get into the university on the basis of your skills. So, getting admission to the university is tough as the entrance tests are very competitive and only the brightest of minds can crack them,” says Mayank Singh, BA (hons) sociology.
Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics
The centre aims to establish a seat of excellence for education of architecture and associated disciplines. The faculty offers two degree courses in architecture, five master’s courses and a PhD programme
Faculty of Engineering and Technology
The faculty operates as an administrative unit within the university. At present, there are six departments — civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and communication, and computer engineering, and applied sciences and humanities. The faculty offers BTech, BE, MTech and MSc
Faculty of Law
Over the past two decades, the faculty has made significant progress in terms of restructuring of courses and syllabi, introducing new courses, experimenting with innovative techniques of imparting legal education. It offers PhD (law), master of laws (LLM) and BA LLB (Hons)
Faculty of Dentistry
This is a relatively new faculty at JMI which offers an undergraduate programme in dental surgery
Faculty of Fine Arts
At present, it comprises of the department of applied art, department of painting, department of sculpture, department of art education, department of art history and art appreciation, department of graphic art. These departments offer a range of graduate and postgraduate programmes, including the country’s only master’s degree in art education

The faculty, through its various departments, offers undergraduation, postgraduation, diploma and PhD courses in almost all science streams
