Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) was born of the freedom struggle in 1920. What started as a small institution in the pre-independence India, JMI is now a central university known for offering the best educational qualification in the fields of education, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and languages, engineering and technology as well as law.

This university attracts students from all over the country as well as overseas and has a distinction of offering education from nursery school to doctoral level.
With English, Hindi as well as Urdu as the mediums of instruction, the university boasts of nine faculties, 39 departments and 27 research centres with over 19,000 students on the rolls. In order to keep pace with the needs of modern professions and global changes, the curricula are moderated regularly to incorporate the needful changes.

Apart from nine different faculties, Jamia also houses many centres, which include AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, FTK-Centre for Information Technology, Dr Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies and the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy of Third World Studies.

Other centres include magement studies, distance and open learning, study of comparative religions and civilizations, Jawaharlal Nehru studies centre for west Asian studies and many more.

The university allows credit transfers for postgraduate level students belonging to the faculty of social sciences, faculty of humanities and social sciences centres (for culture,  media and governance and Nelson Mandela centre for peace and conflict resolution). They can opt for courses outside their parent departments under the  credit transfer scheme.

All MA programmes offered by the faculties have a minimum total credit value of 64. Of these, eight credits may be earned from outside the parent department, through credit transfers, if a student so desires. Not more than one paper may be offered from outside the department in any one semester.

“Besides academics, my department has always encouraged participation in extra-curricular activities and a number of cultural festivals and academic seminars are routinely conducted here,” Saumya Kulshreshtha, MA English student.

“One doesn’t have to score 90% to get admission in JMI, you can get into the university on the basis of your skills. So, getting admission to the university is tough as the entrance tests are very competitive and only the brightest of minds can crack them,” says Mayank Singh, BA (hons) sociology.
