Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has emerged as one of the most sought-after institutions in the city. The university has shifted its admission process completely to the online space this year to further widen its reach. Admissions for 29,000 seats across over 150 programmes in the university are being done through the university’s online platform, and there will be no offline mode of applications.

Anup Singh Beniwal, vice chancellor of GGSIPU, points out that the move to online admissions will benefit students from across the country. “Earlier, they had to travel to Delhi from different cities to apply to prgrammes in the university. Now, they can access the application forms from the comforts of their homes. This way, we will also be saving some money on printing forms,” he says.

Beniwal feels that the number of applicants might increase to around 2.25 lakh from 2 lakh last year. Students can log on to www.ipu.ac.in for details on eligibility, test codes, programmes and the common entrance test (CET) application forms. The application forms are priced at `750 each, considerably less than `1,100 last year.
One of the highlights of the university is the fact that it offers an interesting assortment of programmes to suit the needs of every student. Beniwal says, “IP University has been based on the premise of what the globalised world wants. Professional programmes such as BTech and IT and a holistic pedagogy are our USP. We upgrade and review our courses every two years.”

“This is done by the research committees and the academic council. Steps such as introduction of supplementary exams to help students meet the promotion criteria for next year, online counselling, new courses such as BTech, BBA, and BCom have been taken to attract more students,” he adds.

That apart, the university keeps adding new courses keeping in mind the demand and the industry trends. Beniwal says, “We have recently started the BCom programme which is very popular. Our MA English and communication studies course is also unique in the sense that it combines study of literature and language.”

“We are hoping to start arts and language courses from next year with a school of languages also being planned. We recently started the Centre for Study and Propagation of Human Values with the idea of making it an integral part of our pedagogy and helping students inculcate these values. A course on sports and spinal injuries is among other initiatives in the offing,” he adds.

The university has also announced a few changes in its course structure and eligibility criteria. For instance, only LLB graduates or sociology graduates were eligible for the MA course in criminology. Now, graduates from all disciplines can apply.

Lateral entry students to BPharma programme need not appear for the CET. The university has a total of 58 test codes but CET will be conducted only for 51 of the test codes. The rest of the programmes for which the university does not conduct CET include BArch, diploma and weekend courses.

The deadline for submitting applications for the BArch course is July 3, while for the other courses, it is April 10. While filling up the application form, candidates can choose more than one course if it falls under the same category, but if they want to apply for multiple courses across various categories, they will have to register separately.

The university has 13 schools of studies and three specialised centres. Now, the first shift of programmes will run from 7am to 3pm and the second shift from 1pm to 9pm in institutes affiliated to the university.
