Life often throws up dilemmas – should we be doing something we truly enjoy or should we try something else that assures us long-term returns and security? However, it’s next to impossible to be happy or successful without a bit of both. What you then need is to figure out what it is that you want from life, not just today but for the future as well.

Reality check:  Life gives us consistent feedback and, unfortunately, our interests don’t always match our capabilities. While that isn’t reason enough to not pursue your passion, you still need to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and what you can realistically achieve.

Profitability helps sustenance: Doing something you really enjoy is great, but if there is no profitability in it, however, interests might wane and other pressures and frustration might take over. In the long run, it’s only possible to sustain activities if you get adequate returns as well.

Passion as the driver: It takes tremendous amounts of motivation, dedication and perseverance to be successful at something. Passion is the driving force that provides you with the strength and energy to withstand adversity.

Passion and profit do go together: Passion and profit are not mutually exclusive. It is not always possible to reap profits without being passionate about what you do. At the same time, to sustain your interests without any profit can pose challenges.

Sync passion and profit: It’s important for you to know your priorities. Once you’re aware of your capabilities and you know what you really want in life, think of ways in which you can make your passion profitable.

Take guidance from seniors: Making such choices is never easy. Talk to people who have lived through these dilemmas themselves. Learn from the wisdom of your seniors.

Plan a vision for yourself: It’s important not to make life decisions rashly. Take your time and think about where you would like to see yourself five, 10 or 20 years down the line.

Prepare a sustainability plan: At the same time, it’s important not to get carried away by lofty ideas. Think realistically and be practical with your decisions. Prepare a long term plan that you think you will be able to sustain. Working it out in your head is important.

Go for the stars: Unrealistic aspirations are better than no aspirations at all. You will never be truly successful if you don’t allow yourself to even dream about it. Aim for the stars.
