The economic slowdown does not seem to have affected pre-placements at the country’s major B-schools, with most management institutes reporting 100% summer placements for their students.

Top hirers at IIM-A
IIM Ahmedabad, which successfully completed its summer internship placement process for the PGP and PGP-ABM batch of 2013-15, had 110 firms participating in the summer placement process, offering opportunities in various sectors and functions.

Consulting, finance and e-commerce companies were the top recruiters besides global investment banks. In terms of the number of offers, the Boston Consulting Group was the top recruiter across clusters, selecting 14 students from campus. Other major recruiters included Goldman Sachs, making seven offers; Aditya Birla Group and GE, extending 10 offers each;  Johnson & Johnson, making nine offers; and Amazon and Infibeam extending nine offers each to students.

Highlighting the importance of the summer placements, Kirti Sharda, chairperson of the IIM-Ahmedabad placement committee, says, “At IIM-A, summer internships are an integral part of the PGP academic programme. Our recruiters play a key role in moulding our students into managers and leaders through the internship process.”

Offers raining at IIM-B
At IIM-Bangalore, the summer placement process for the Class of 2015 concluded in just three days, placing the largest ever batch of students at the institute. A total of 135 recruiters visited the campus, which resulted in 398 internship offers for PGP students. While 29% of the offers were from the sales and marketing domain, around 22% of students bagged internships in the banking and financial services segment. The management consulting sector absorbed 23% of the batch.

According to Sankarshan Basu, chairperson, career development services at IIM-Bangalore, “Credit should also be given to the diversity and rich work experience of the batch. The two-month summer internship has been lauded by firms visiting the campus as it provides necessary corporate exposure, making our graduates ideal candidates for taking up a range of challenging managerial roles.”

All placed at IIM-L
IIM-Lucknow achieved 100% summer placements for its 29th batch of 475 students within six days. The recruitment drive saw participation of 159 domestic and foreign companies. The top four segments based on roles offered were sales and marketing, finance, consulting and business development. Despite the current economic situation, the institute attracted significant roles in the finance domain.

Some of the top recruiting firms were Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, American Express, McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte and Accenture.

XLRI going strong
XLRI Jamshedpur also registered positive trends. The recruitment drive saw 105 companies participating in the process and making 336 offers to 303 students. “So far, we have received 55 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 30 pre-placement interviews. We are looking strong to break the last year mark of 62 PPOs,” says Rajiv Misra, chairperson, placements at XLRI. The top recruiters at XLRI were Vodafone, Microsoft and ITC.
