When global internet company Directi started CodeChef, a non-profit initiative in 2009, the idea was to improve the quality of Indian programming and bring it to international levels and also to help Indian teams improve their performance at contests like the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).

CodeChef is a competitive online platform. Two contests are held every month for professionals, college and school children. Prizes are given both at the global (US$400)  and the national level ( Rs. 12000 as the first prize and Rs. 8000 as the second prize).

The first, 10-day online competition is held on the first Friday of every month and covers two weekends. It has 10 problems of varying difficulty levels. The second is a short contest that takes place on the second last Sunday of every month. It takes place from 930 pm to 12 pm. Both the competitions are open to everybody. The rank list is segregated into global and Indian.
