The Class 12 CBSE examinations will begin with English, which, students often rue, can bring down their overall percentage. But teachers insist that the following tips can help.

Sample papers
They advise practising at least 5 to 6 sample papers. They also insist on practising by writing. "It will increase speed and enable better comprehension and retention," said Usha Ram, Principal, Laxman Public School.

Read thoroughly
The best way to prepare for the Literature section is to read every single lesson minutely. Students should also be well-versed with current affairs. "Topics for letters or articles are generally contemporary issues," said Rumna Mitra Lala, Head of Department (English), Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar.

Answer to the point
Students often complain that the paper is lengthy. This happens as they do not stick to the word limit, teachers say. Simple language is equally important.

Neat presentation
Good handwriting and neat presentation are essential. "Answer in paragraphs, underline the key points and avoid spelling mistakes or grammatical errors," said Mukta Sharma, an English teacher at Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar.

Additional tips
In English Core, the Advanced Writing Skills section carries more marks. In Functional English, grammar is a sure shot way to score full marks. Reading newspaper editorials will help in preparing for value-based and Higher Order Thinking Skills questions. To do well in article-writing, it is important to have a very striking introduction.
