Ramnarain Ruia College in Matunga has become the first and only college in the country to have been accorded the ‘College of Excellence’ status by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

While the college was given the Potential for Excellence status in 2010-11, the upgraded status was conferred following a presentation to the expert committee in December 2013.

This is first phase of the UCG’s College of Excellence scheme.  Under this status, the UGC has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 2 crore to the college to implement its future plans which mainly deal with the theme of ‘Sustainability’ with reference to teaching and learning, resource and research. This status holds good for five years, ranging from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014.

“The college has displayed high level of academic standard in teaching as well as learning including upgraded infrastructure and Information Technology to enhance the higher education. The UGC, within three years has realized that Ruia deserves the status of an excellent college,” said Suhas Pednekar, principal, Ruia College.

One of the main eligibility criteria for this status is a score of more than 3.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in its National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grade along with  innovative programmes, improved university examination results, student support services etc.

“Research at the undergraduate level will benefit greatly from this grant. While academic autonomy is our next aim, UGC should take the intuitive of conferring autonomy themselves on colleges they feel have the potential to sustain the autonomy,” said Pednekar.
