Symbiosis University, Pune has decided to continue with the present format of four year course  while at the same time making a detailed  representation to UGC.

The Board of Management (BOM) meeting of Symbiosis which met on Saturday took a decision in this regard. The Academic Council of the university which met on Thursday also decided the same.

The UGC had recently asked Indian  Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore, Symbiosis University and Shiv Nadar to roll back their four year courses. A few days back  it was decided that  IISc, Bangalore will continue to run its undergraduate programme but will award a BSc (Research) degree instead of a BSc degree at the end of fourth year.

Principal director Symbiosis  Vidya Yeravdekar  told HT that the Institute runs a large number of courses which are three years. " The four year course relates only to a special school of Liberal Arts that was started four years ago with an objective of providing education to students who wanted to go to the US.  This course provides holistic development of students by providing large number of electives."

"The BOM  has resolved to continue the FYUP and make a representation to UGC with a detail structure on the course. There are 42 electives, 18 majors and the last year is devoted to extensive  research, dissertation, project and seminar. These kind of courses requires four years," she said.

When contacted a high level source in UGC said: " We will see what they have said in their response and then decide.
