A theatre artiste performs an act in public or on a stage.  According to Abdul Latif Khatana, a theatre artiste and former director of National School of Drama, a theatre artiste should be able to concentrate, listen, observe and think critically. “Theatre artistes should know his/her role well while performing. They should prepare themselves not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well for it. They must also be well trained in voice modulation and performing skills,” he says.

An array of opportunities are available for theatre artistes in television and films. They can also join the cultural department of any state. “The quality of actors has improved in the last 30 years but in other aspects like direction, design and writing, a lot more improvement is needed,” says Aamir Raza Husain, a veteran theatre artiste.
