Farhan Akhtar essays the role of athlete Milkha Singh in the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. The film is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

Actor Farhan Akhtar is a happy man. His portrayal of sprinter Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (BMB) has earned him an award from the Capital’s youth. Farhan got the maximum number of votes in the best actor category of Delhi Youth Choice Awards — where students of Delhi University voted online through Facebook.

“It feels wonderful to see that the film and my performance has resonated so strongly with the youth of India. Very honoured to receive this recognition,” said Farhan. DU students also voted for Deepika Padukone as the best actor award (female) for her role in Goliyon ki Raasleela — Ram Leela.

The awards, held for the first time this year, have been conceptualised by University Express (an online forum for youth that provides latest news from the campus).

“We believe that the youth’s opinion is of prime importance. The idea was to recognise the best in various fields and through social media, it (the voting) was transparent,” said Sankalp Mathur of University Express. Chennai Express, which was a nominee in the best film category, lost out to BMB.
