The lowdown
Indian postal services come under the Central Group ‘A’ services. IPoS officers are recruited through the civil service examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. They are posted in the postal department. Like other civil servants, they are eligible to move on deputation to other ministries and departments of the central government, state government or even on foreign assignment to United Nations bodies. “In terms of technology induction, India Post is miles ahead of its competitors in the private sector,” says Aman Sharma, director, Delhi postal circle

Clockwork
The normal working hours in administrative offices are from 9am to 5.30pm, five days in a week. However, a government servant like Indian postal services officer works 24x7, as per the call of duty. In addition to the administrative work at the office, there are field visits for inspections and supervision of the post office functions

The starting salary is about  Rs. 32,000 per month. After the sixth pay commission’s recommendations, the salary structure has been revised. Structures depend on one’s scale also.
