An event manager organises a professional and focused event for a specific target audience. It involves visualising concepts and planning, budgeting, organising and executing events such as fashion shows, musical concerts, corporate seminars, exhibitions, wedding celebrations, theme parties, product launches etc. On the basis of their domain expertise/service offerings, event managers can be categorised into two types — experiential marketing professionals and live entertainment professionals. Experiential marketing professionals focus on providing marketing and communications solutions to clients. Live entertainment professionals are proficient in creating the exciting and entertainment experience for audiences. There are numerous occasions where these roles can combine to deliver the best results. This career does not require much investment and offers a huge canvas for creative expression

Clockwork
A day in the life of an event manager will not be too structured, as a lot depends on the client’s requirements
10.30am: Client meetings
11.30am: Make strategies and find innovative solutions
1pm: Creative rendition of design
3.30pm: Presentation of ideas
4.45pm: Logistics planning and cost estimation
5.30pm onwards: Project execution on the site of event

The payoff
Remuneration in this field varies according to the type of event and the company one is working for. At beginner’s level, one can earn up to Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh per annum. As the person moves ahead, the salary can go up to Rs. 7.5 lakh per annum. At senior level, one get can get Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 36 lakh per annum

Getting there
No certification course or specific qualification is required to become an event manager. Graduates with good public relations and networking skills can join this field. Some institutes offer specialised diplomas and advanced diplomas in event management. However, some of the biggest firms may prefer candidates who have an MBA degree, along with good PR skills. One option for you could also be a public relations course along with a master’s degree in marketing
