I just shifted from Allahabad to Delhi. I have a group of teachers who make fun of my background. I am scared of going to school after the summer break. I do not want to involve my family or school authorities. Please guide me. —Ragged

I understand that you are new and your parents are busy, so you do not want to involve them but involving them could be a major breakthrough in the process of handling your stress. In case the situation remains the same by the time your school re-opens, it will be a good idea to involve your parents and the school authorities. You can talk to the school authorities, teachers/ counsellors about your concerns. Have confidence in yourself and try making friends in class. Once you make friends at school, you can look forward to healthy discussions through which you can share your viewpoints with them. Try to do new things as it will help you adopt fresh perspectives in life as well as help you feel more comfortable with new places and people but at the same time never feel the pressure to do things which you feel are inappropriate. Your exposure to a few things may be limited when compared to other children or that’s what they want you to believe but that in no way makes you incapable or worthless. Try to focus on your strengths. All the best! ----- Jitendra Nagpal

Q.
I just took my 12th board exams and the NLU Delhi test. Both my parents have made their career in law. They want me, too, to take up law. My Class 12 exams did not go well. I do not want to do law. I want to become an actor. I really do not know what to do. Whenever I tell my parents, they make fun of me and say that after doing law I can proceed with my dreams. My parents never take me seriously. I want to die. I want to run away from all this. I have no one to communicate with. I feel alone in the crowd. I hate myself. Please help me. I want to fulfil my dream of becoming an actor. —Frustrated

After reading your question, I understand that pursuing a career in law appears challenging to you. You have already taken the National Law University. Since you have put your energy in this direction, it may be worthwhile to hang in there for a little bit longer to see the results from these efforts instead of rushing off to a new venture out of frustration. It may be useful to objectively assess that your other option of acting as a career is not out of false notion that it would be easier and not require studying or hard work. If you are getting stuck in some areas of law preparation, seeking help in those areas to maximise your effort and input would be the next logical step. Engaging in stress relieving activities like yoga, exercise, playing some sport, going for walks, and deep breathing regularly can make you feel more in control. ---- Jitendra Nagpal

Q.
I am 23 years old. I have been disturbed by certain thoughts for a long time. Also, I have been taking medicines for several mental disorders for a long time now. I have thoughts in which I think about other people rejecting, abusing, persecuting, teasing me, and thoughts pop up as they are saying that to me. My disorder ruined my career and I am afraid it might ruin my life. I have a situation in which I can’t detach myself from my parents. Where should I go for help? —Devbrat

Research has shown that there is an increase in incidents of mental health disorders in our society. The reasons for this could be chemical, social, environmental, in the individual’s personality or a combination of these. All of us from time to time deal with thoughts such as those described by you. They just differ in intensity, frequency and duration. It is commendable that you have sought help for them and are on medication because as you yourself mentioned, several individuals may not be aware and suffer in silence or cause suffering to others. Your insight into your problem is definitely a very good thing because awareness is the first step towards control and change. Don’t lose heart and ambition. Discuss it with your treating psychiatrist and he can refer you to a psychologist who can work with you in setting realistic goals after evaluating your strengths and weaknesses with you. ---- Jitendra Nagpal
