India got off to a perfect start in the ICC Champions Trophy campaign on Sunday as they beat arch-rivals Pakistan by a mammoth 124-run margin (D/L method) in their inaugural Group B game. This was their second victory over Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy history, having beaten by their neighbours on the other two occasions.

In a rain-marred match that kept halting the game throughout, India were off to a fine start with four of their batsmen scoring half-centuries while the bowlers shared the workload to run through the Pakistan batting line-up.

Pakistan, now ranked eighth in the world, may not be the same quality opposition that they used to be until a few years back, but a clash between the two is always a special affair. Naturally, congratulations poured on social media with almost every player and the #IndvPak trending at one point. This was also the second highest victory margin over Pakistan after the 140-run margin at Dhaka in 2008.

“What a smooth win #TeamIndia. Heartiest congratulations!!! Way to go and bring the trophy 🏆 home! #INDvPAK #ChampionsTrophy2017 @BCCI @ICC,” wrote Suresh Raina on Twitter. The southpaw had a terrific run in the Indian Premier League this season with Gujarat Lions but wasn’t picked for the Champions Trophy squad. He had featured in the final against England in 2013, when India pulled off a remarkable victory to lift the title.

A hero of India’s famous Natwest Trophy win back in 2002, Mohammad Kaif wasn’t too far behind as well. While congratulating Virat Kohli’s men, the former India cricketer also took a dig at Pakistan, stating that the opponents on the night justified that India were truly playing a No 8 side. “That was too easy for India. Pakistan played like a No.8 side. Congratulations India, superb victory.#INDvPAK,” Kaif wrote on the micro-blogging website.

India’s victory meant they had beaten Pakistan for the 13th time, including super-over wins, in an ICC event, the most by any team against any opponent till date. A part of that illustrious figure, Zaheer Khan, too, congratulated the team. “Clinical performance by Indian team to kick start the campaign. Congratulations!! #INDvPAK #CT17,” the former fast bowler stated.

India’s first World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev, summed up the show with a single tweet. Besides congratulating all the half-centurions — Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh — the Haryana Hurricane also praised Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja for picking up two wickets each.

Although India were off to a slow start, Yuvraj Singh changed that quickly after he came on, blasting a quickfire 32-ball 53 to guide India past the 300-run mark. That knock changed the pace of the innings as Kohli and later Hardik Pandya stepped on the gas as well, picking up 72 runs in the last four overs. Yuvraj was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
