The Union Railway Budget has not extended any special favours to Delhi. The Capital’s railway stations that handle the burden of its adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana haven’t been awarded with any big ticket development project.
The cash-strapped Delhi division of the northern railways was in desperate need of funds for the upgradation of its infrastructure, especially at Anand Vihar and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations, and had high hopes from the budget.
“The budget has been disappointing. There was not even a mention of Delhi in the rail budget,” a senior railway officer said.
The Delhi division had sought Rs. 350 crore from the budget but as of now no special favour has been extended to the Capital.
“We had big plans for all six major stations of the Capital but for now we have shelve them,” the officer added.
Delhi has got only five new trains, of which only three originate from the city. Apart from this, railway minister Dinesh Trivedi promised a pre-feasibility study to be taken up in 2012-13 on Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer-Jodhpur corridor. He has also announced that the travel time between the Capital and Kolkata will come down from 17 to 14 hours by increasing the speed of Howrah Rajdhani train.
The three new trains that will depart from Sarai Rohilla railway station are Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Udhampur AC Express (triweekly), Anand Vihar-Haldia Express (weekly) and Bandra-Delhi Sarai Rohilla Express (weekly).
A new train has also been announced between Jabalpur and Hazrat Nizamuddin station. Also the Ajmer-Haridwar Express will be routed through the Capital.
The budget even overlooked the demands of senior citizens. Yet another year has passed and male senior citizens have not been given the same rebate as the women.
Male seniors get a 40 per cent rebate while women get 50 per cent rebate on train tickets.
