An explosion in a steel plant in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Wednesday killed a worker and injured 15 others.

After ordering a probe into the incident, the state government deputed a team from the directorate of factories and boilers for an on-the-spot assessment.

Police said the explosion occurred at about 10 am in the newly-built second blast furnace of Bhushan Steel Limited at Narendrapur, about 150 km west of Bhubaneswar, when several contractual labourers were working in the plant.

Personnel of fire brigade rushed to the spot recovering the body of the deceased and rescuing the injured.

However, eyewitnesses said some more people might be trapped under the debris.

“Only after the fire is brought under control, the exact number of casualties and injuries could be ascertained,” said deputy director of factories and boilers HC Sahu.
