Ten people were killed and six others injured when a truck carrying them plunged into a river in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district, police said on Thursday.

On its way to Shillong from the coal belts in Nonghyllam-Nongjri areas, the truck carrying coal labourers who were returning home on the occasion of Christmas fell into the Ranikor river on Wednesday evening, the sources said.

The injured were taken to the primary health centre at Ranikor village, about 140 km south from Shillong.

The police were verifying the exact cause of the accident.
