In yet another shocking development in the horrific case of a 10-year-old girl raped and impregnated by her step-father, the district child welfare committee (CWC) has raised suspicion over the mother’s involvement in the crime.

CWC chairman Dr Raj Singh Sangwan told HT that the mother was not cooperating with them in counselling and could be manipulating the victim as well.

“If her involvement is found in the crime, or if the victim says she does not want to go back to her mother, then we will definitely not hand over the victim to her, considering her future,” Sangwan said.

The suspicion against the mother grew after she sought the release of her rapist husband citing her poverty. She said her first husband had passed away due to kidney failure, after which his younger brother married her to take care of her four children.

However, the CWC now fears that the mother might be lying about her first husband’s death and could have eloped with his younger brother.

“She has been ducking questions on the death of her first husband and has not been able to produce any document, such as death certificate to testify his death. She said that she belongs to Muzzafarnagar in Bihar. Based on the address given by her, we will write to the CWC in Bihar on Saturday to check her social background and about her first husband.

Through this, we may also find any other relative of the victim who is financially sound and ready to take the custody of the girl if the mother’s involvement is proved,” the chairman said.

The CWC has also appointed a legal advisor for the victim, who will provide free legal aid for her and seek maximum compensation from the state for her future.

The victim had successfully undergone abortion on Friday and was doing well.
