A four-member gang set afire a 10-year-old girl on Thursday in the city just to teach her father a lesson over an old rivalry.

The girl has sustained 75% burn injuries and is now battling for life in a government hospital.

She was studying in a government school, and according to police, the four planned to attack her on her way to school along with her younger sister. They carried a can of kerosene and waited for her near a hillside close to a temple that she used to visit before heading for school.

After prayers, she went to answer nature's call at a little distance away when the gang attacked her. But her younger sister cried alarm and passers-by rushed her to the hospital and then informed her parents.

The police said that the accused did this heinous act just to settle old scores with the girls' father Venkatesh. The accused Shreenivas and others had rivalry with Venkatesh for three years now.

Venkatesh had filed a complaint against Srinivas with Bannerghatta police for robbing him of Rs. 10,000. Although a case was filed, it was withdrawn after the interference of local leaders.

Venkatesh told the police that Sreenivas was trying to attack him since then. Venkatesh said that Sreenivas attacked his daughter to provoke him for a clash but did not succeed. Then, Sreenivas, hired three more local goons and attacked the girl, DCP Harsha said.

The girl is now fighting for her life in the ICU of Victorial hospital burning ward.
