The girl, a Class 7 student at a village school in the district located 100 km east of capital Bhubaneswar, sustained serious burn injuries and was admitted in the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.

The girl’s family members told the police the 20-year-old accused had been stalking and harassing her for quite some time.

The accused and his accomplice set her on fire after dousing her in kerosene, the police said. “Both are on the run. Efforts are on to nab them,” Kendrapada sub-divisional police officer NC Swain said.
