Police on Wednesday arrested the fourth accused in connection with the molestation of an 18-year-old girl in a Mumbai suburb on Monday evening.

The incident took place in a chawl at Hindustan Naka in Charkop area on Monday at around 4.30pm, according to the police.

When the complainant arrived near the chawl with her friend in an auto rickshaw, her friend realised she was short of money. She then went to her house in the chawl to get money for the fare and asked the girl to wait in the auto.

The girl walked into the chawl to look for her friend when she did not return after several minutes.

As soon as she entered, the group of men noticed her and started passing lewd comments, police said.

The zonal deputy commissioner of police (DCP) said that the girl ran out of the Kandivli (West) chawl towards a restaurant but did not seek anyone's help there, as published in some sections of the media.

"There were not 12 men, who molested the girl. In her complaint, she told the police that there were around five to six men, who misbehaved with her. She ran towards the restaurant but got scared after seeing so many people inside. She left the restaurant and got in an auto. She did not seek anyone's help," DCP Zone 11 B Rajput told Hindustan Times.

Rajput confirmed the fourth arrest and said they are on the lookout for the other accused.

The police also said that the girl's clothes were not torn and she managed to run away from the chawl before the situation worsened.

"The girl told us that the group of men tried to grope her and grabbed her hands and legs. She managed to free herself and ran outside the chawl. Her clothes were not torn in the incident," said GD Sadatare, assistant inspector of police, who is the investigating officer of the case.

The police said that they have started process of recording the statements of the paan vendor and the people present inside the restaurant at the time of the incident. They said there are no CCTV footage at the restaurant but they are in the process of corroborating the sequence of events.

The police registered an FIR early on Tuesday, after which two others from the group were arrested. The three have been identified as Fayyaz Khan, 20, Saroj Khan, 20, and Naushad Khan, 22.

A case under sections 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty) and 34 (common intention) is registered against the accused.
