A 19-year-old student was killed and another injured when a speeding truck overturned near Hindon Air Force crossing in Sahibabad on Sunday, the police said.

Three cranes and two JCB machines were pressed into service to take out the victims who were trapped under the vehicle. The rescue operation lasted for about one-and-a-half hours, said a police official.

According to the police, the incident took place around 5:15am when Hema, a BBA student of a private college in the city, and her friend Neha, a first-year Delhi University student, were taking a morning walk along the Delhi-Wazirabad Road near the Hindon Air Force crossing. The police said Hema and Neha, both residents of New Kahreda Colony, remained trapped under the loaded truck for hours. Hema died in the incident, whereas Neha has sustained critical injuries, an official said.

According to the police, the truck—laden with sand  was coming from Bhopra. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was speeding and lost control at a sharp turn.

“The driver lost control near Hindon Air Force crossing and the truck overturned. Neha and Hema got trapped under its wheels. Hema died on the spot, while Neha is recuperating at a hospital,” said RN Yadav, inspector, Sahibabad police station.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and impounded the truck. A hunt has been launched to nab the errant driver, said an  investigating official.
