The Tripura government has suspended three policemen accused of custodial torture. The suspension came in response to a directive of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), said a police officer.

On September 17, the three policemen had allegedly tortured a tribal man at the Ganganagar police station in north Tripura's Dhalai district.

Karnajoy Reang had been picked up from a market and put behind the bars even though there was no complaint against him. He was tortured in the lock-up overnight and the next morning, he was admitted to a hospital in a serious condition.

Reang later complained that assistant sub inspector Satyaranjan Majumder, constables Rajesh Banik and Babul Das had tortured him with sticks and stubbed with cigarettes.

After the incident came to light, a complaint was lodged with the NHRC. The panel sent a directive to the state government, demanding the suspension of the policemen and a probe by an IPS officer.
