Despite the uproar over the rape of the 23-year-old woman in Delhi, rape continues countrywide - and in all the latest cases, the assailant was no stranger to the victim.
Among the victims is an 11-year-old child, who was raped on two consecutive days - December 18 and 19 - allegedly by a relative and his friend at Ainoli village in Karnataka's Gulbarga district.
In fact, Shankar, her relative, had instigated his friend Ramesh to rape her, said superintendent of police N Satish Kumar. Her parents had initially complained only against Ramesh. "But it was found that Shankar had raped her twice on the first day," said Kumar. "Both men were arrested on Wednesday."
In Madhya Pradesh's Indore, two more cases of rape were reported on Wednesday. In the first, the man took advantage of the victim by promising to help her look for a house. In the second, the woman's landlord raped her to get even with her husband.
On Tuesday, a house-hunting jaunt went horribly wrong for a 45-year-old divorcee in Khajrana. The local milkman, Sohrab Patel, who had promised to help her look for a house, called his friend Kadar Patel and raped her.
In Mahdev Totala Nagar, a 33-year-old woman was raped allegedly by her landlord on Wednesday. Roop Kishore Agarwal, 48, had assaulted the woman in her own home, said a police officer. The victim's husband had financed a vehicle in the name of Agarwal and the two had a brawl over the issue.
