Three men, allegedly Naxalites, gang-raped three teachers of a government-run residential tribal school in Gadchiroli district, around 250 km from Nagpur, on Thursday.

The three men picked up the teachers — one of them six month’s pregnant — from the school at Rangi village saying they had been summoned to a meeting in the forest. They gang-raped them for over five hours.

Gadchiroli Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Sharma, however, said the Naxalites were not involved. “Considering the Naxalite track record, they can’t do such a heinous act,” he said.

Sharma said a man on Thursday told the hostel superintendent that the Naxalites wanted the school staffers to attend a meeting. When none of them went for the meeting, the three reached the school around 11 pm. Introducing themselves as Naxalites, they asked the teachers to clarify why they had kept the school open despite a bandh by the Naxalites. They took the teachers to the forest.

After the teachers were released, they complained to the project officer of the Integrated Tribal Department Project.
