A 33-year old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including a school headmaster, in Umarda village of Kannauj on August 16.
The accused headmaster, who is the son of a female village head has been arrested.
Kannauj is the constituency of Dimple Yadav, the chief minister's wife, and the police have promised to take "no chances" with the investigation.
A vaginal swab of the victim has been taken and the police are readying to conduct a DNA test on the accused. Superintendent of police, Kannauj, Anil Kumar Jain told HT that while the accused has been arrested they had doubts over whether the victim had been gang-raped or not.
"Since it's a sensitive matter we haven't taken any chances and arrested the main accused on the basis of the victim's claim. However preliminary investigations have revealed that the rape charge may well have been levelled against the village head's son due to an old enmity, in which a former village head could also be involved," the SP said.
Faizabad Still Tense
Tension continued to grip Amaniganj town in Faizabad district following the alleged gangrape and murder of a girl. Protests erupted again on Monday and the police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas to disperse the mob.
A large police force has been deployed to the town and several senior officers are in the area.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav appealed for calm and said action would be taken against the accused.
A police man said the situation was tense because the victim and accused belonged to different communities.
