Four children aged between seven and nine died after they were buried under the debris of a collapsed wall of a dilapidated house at Chaushala village in Kalayat block of Kaithal district.
The children -identified as Ajay, Sachin, Bhupinder and Nutun - had left their village homes to play on Wednesday evening as usual. However, when they failed to return till around 8.30pm, their parents panicked and launched a search along with other co-villagers. After a frantic search that lasted about three hours, some villagers spotted a bicycle of one of the children parked near Chavyan Rishi temple.
Soon, they came across the debris of a wall of the old house located near the temple. As soon as some villagers removed the debris in the presence of police, which had been informed about the missing children, they came across the badly injured children.
The children were rushed to the Indira Gandhi Multi-Speciality Hospital in Kaithal, where they were declared brought dead. The bodies were handed over to their respective families after post-mortems on Thursday morning.
Deputy commissioner Chander Shekhar and superintendent of police Kuldeep Singh Yadav reached the hospital to sympathise with the bereaved families. Sub-divisional magistrate Nar Hari Bangar and district development officer Rajesh Khoth later also visited the village.
Villagers maintained that the wall seemed to have collapsed in the wake of recent downpour in the village.
