Five persons were feared dead and over 60 injured in two separate bus accidents in different parts of Bihar on Tuesday morning.

As per initial reports, while four persons were feared dead in a bus accident in Rohtas, 155 km (approx) south-west of Patna; a five-year old child died when a school bus turned turtle near Ara, 61 km (approx) to west of Patna.

The deceased child had been identified as Amit Kumar, a preparatory class student of the DB Public school, Ara.

Eyewitnesses said the school bus was driving at a high speed when it tried to avert a head-on collision with an SUV coming from the opposite direction. The mishap took place between Pakwa Enar and Salempur villages, near Dhobha Bazar, 11 km from Ara.

The driver of the school bus lost control as the bus went off the road, into a ditch containing rainwater. Many schoolchildren were trapped inside the bus as it turned turtle. Passers-by rushed to rescue the children and a JCB machine was used to retrieve the bus from the ditch.

The injured were rushed to the Ara sadar hospital. Deputy superintendent of the Ara sadar hospital, Dr Kumar Jitendra, confirmed the death of one child. “Three out of the 35 schoolchildren who have been admitted have been referred to the Patna Medical College Hospital, Patna. Their condition is critical,” he told HT.
