Accusing Arvind Kejriwal of betraying the Capital's voters and leaving them in the lurch, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely on Sunday said the Aam Aadmi Party leader had done so to launch his national political career.

Speaking at a 'pol khol' campaign that aims to expose the "false claims" made by the AAP, Singh said Kejriwal's 49-day government in Delhi had failed to deliver on any of the promises the party had made in its campaign.

"The government left the citizens who had voted for them midway. They were keen on running away from their responsibilities. We had said that we would support the jan lokpal bill provided it was brought in through the constitutional channel.

"Why did they not send the bill to the Lieutenant Governor at the beginning? Rahul Gandhi made sure the Lokpal Bill was passed in Parliament," he said.

Kejriwal, who had formed the government in Delhi with outside support of the Congress, resigned on February 14 after failing to table his pet jan lokpal bill, meant to fight corruption, in the assembly.

Lovely also took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at the meeting. "We are already distraught because of one feku and another one has joined his ranks. Kejriwal can make it to the Guinness records if there is a category for lying," he said.

Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed, former ministers Haroon Yusuf and Kiran Walia, and former MLA Mukesh Sharma also participated in the 'pol khol' meeting at Central Park.

Ahmed justified the Congress decision to extend outside support to the AAP. "We decided to support the AAP because 16% of our voters voted for them this time. We realised we had lost because of people who lie and make false promises. We wanted to show the people of the city the real face of the AAP."

Congress supporters burnt Kejriwal's effigy at the event.

The Delhi Congress unit had launched the 'pol khol' campaign in west Delhi last week.
