On Wednesday afternoon, both appeared before jail superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma and requested that work be assigned to them.

A special CBI court on November 25 convicted the dentist couple of double murder and destruction of evidence. A day later, the judge sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment.

The couple will have to work from 10am to 5pm for six days a week. Apart from a Sunday off, Rajesh and Nupur will have the option to avail of four days off if they desire, as per the rules.

“This is applicable to all inmates who are undergoing rigorous imprisonment. Each of them will also receive Rs. 40 per day. They have the option either to get the amount transferred in a bank account or get coupons from us for purchase of daily articles from the jail canteen,” superintendent Sharma told Hindustan Times.

They will be allowed to meet for 20 minutes once a week on Saturdays at a park inside the jail complex.

“As per rules, in imprisonment for more than seven years, family members can meet them once in 15 days while their lawyers can meet them once in a week. For under-trials, the family can have two meetings per week,” Sharma added.

The couple may be hogging the headlines, but the Talwars will get to watch news channels chosen only by the jail officials, between 7pm and 7.30pm. If lucky, they may get to read one newspaper, which is provided for 100 inmates. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2013/11/28-11-pg2b.jpg

Convicts with over seven years of imprisonment are automatically transferred to a central jail. The zonal central jail for Ghaziabad is at Agra.

“They have verbally requested us not to shift them to Agra. If they give a written application, it will be forwarded to higher officials for consideration,” Sharma added.

Nupur is lodged at women’s barrack number 13 with 35 other inmates while Rajesh is lodged at barrack number 11 with 21 others. “Like the other inmates, we have given Rajesh a white kurta-pyjama and Nupur got a smoke-grey coloured salwar suit/saree.”

The Dasna jail houses 4,880 inmates against a capacity of 1,704.

“The doctors told us that both of them had sleepless nights and anxiety for the past 10-15 days and lack of rest led to high blood pressure and acidity. Now both are normal and performing their daily routine,” Sharma said. The day at Dasna prison begins around 5.45am. After a gap of 15 minutes, each inmate is required to be present in the gallery for counting. Thereafter, a simple breakfast of tea and gur (jaggery) is provided and another one hour is spent on washing clothes and bathing.
