With the late night movement of the second senior most officer in the apex investigation agency RK Dutta to the post of special secretary without portfolio in the ministry of home affairs, the stage appears set for the Central Bureau of Investigation to be headless for the next few months. Dutta who served for nearly 14 years in CBI was Special Director since 2014.

Director Anil Sinha retires on December 3, and if no replacement is named by then, the organisation will be headed by 1984 batch Gujarat cadre office Rakesh Asthana, now additional director in CBI.

The selection meeting for next the CBI director has not been scheduled yet. The panel that selects the CBI director consists of the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice of India. Chief Justice of India TS Thakur retires in January 2017.
