Exuding confidence of a good performance, opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Sunday said it will fight the upcoming pachayat polls in Assam and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on its own.

Presiding over the 27th foundation of the regional party at North Lakhimpur, AGP president and former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said the party has been able to leave behind the era of dissidence and divisions.

"We are positive that the people will repose faith in us once more. The Congress government of the last 11 years have failed in all fronts," Mahanta said.

Mahanta expressed confidence that AGP will perform well in the panchayat polls slated for early 2013 and the Lok Sabha polls of 2014 on its own.

The party also resolved to take a stand against construction of big dams in the state and came out against the proposed Brahmaputra River Valley Authority (BRVA).

"The BRVA will not solve any issue and will in fact be a non-starter. Our party will stand with the common people of the state in their fight against big dams," Mahanta said.

He also called for immediate steps to solve the issue of illegal immigrants, besides asking the government to commence work on updating the National Register of Citizens and for implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Accord.

The party also passed a resolution calling for speedy rehabilitation of the people affected during the recent ethnic violence in lower Assam.
