Retired justice AK Ganguly had indeed stayed at Delhi’s Le Meridien hotel last winter as a guest of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and he had asked for a separate room, sources in the AIFF have confirmed. Also, on two days, he had two different assistants.

The confirmation came a day after additional solicitor general Indira Jaisingh wrote an article in a leading daily, giving out details from the affidavit of a young lawyer who had accused Ganguly of sexual harassment. Among other things, Ganguly had asked her to stay overnight in the hotel and had even asked for an extra room, the woman had alleged.

Ganguly was in Delhi from 23 to 27 December 2012 to decide on an appeal by Mohun Bagan, which had walked out of a match and stood to be disqualified from the tournament. In such cases, asking a retired judge to step in is the norm. As part of the arrangement with the AIFF, he was to be provided with an assistant of his choice.

“On the afternoon of December 24, Ganguly asked for another room at the hotel,” said an AIFF official on condition of anonymity. The AIFF failed to do so, but agreed to provide transport for the assistant. “The next day, he had a different assistant,” the official added.

In her affidavit, the woman had said after no room could be had, Ganguly asked her to share his room. While she was leaving, he made further advances. She had not gone back to work after the incident.
