Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday removed principal secretary (home) AK Gupta in an apparent move to blunt the criticism his government is facing over a series of sex crimes in the state.

Gupta has been put on the waiting list of posting, an official spokesperson said. He was appointed principal secretary (home) on October 15, 2013, in place of RM Shrivastav.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) government in UP is in the line of fire following the gang-rape and murder of two cousins in Katra village, Badaun.

Rival political parties and human rights groups have turned the heat on the SP government over the deteriorating law and order. Even the United Nations has condemned the incident.

Gupta's removal is the second major shifting in the state government in three days. Akhilesh had given the marching order to chief secretary Jawed Usmani last Saturday and had appointed Alok Ranjan in his place.

Sources said that an exercise was underway for a major reshuffling in the police department as well.

It is learnt that the chief minister has expressed his displeasure over the rise in crime rate in the wake of the Badaun incident and talked to senior police officials.
