Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated the out-patient department (OPD) of the Greater Noida Medical University and Associated Hospital, erstwhile Kanshi Ram Multi-speciality Hospital, through video-conferencing from Lucknow on Tuesday.

More than 200 patients visited the OPD on the first day.

The chief minister launched many projects worth Rs. 3,337 crore in Noida and Greater Noida. Former chief minister Mayawati’s dream project may now be called Greater Noida Medical University and Associated Hospital. However, there has been no official word the change of the nomenclature.

“Speculation is rife that the facility will not be called Kanshi Ram Multi-speciality Hospital. However, no one in the department is confirming the news,” said an official.

The 500-bed hospital, spread over 15 acres, is adjacent to the Gautam Buddha University (GBU). Constructed at a cost of Rs. 760 crore, the hospital was scheduled to become functional in June 2011.

The Uttar Pradesh government had also allocated Rs. 350 crore for purchasing equipment in the facility.

Meanwhile, other departments such as general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, ENT, ophthalmology, gynaecology and skin also became operational on Tuesday.

The institute has procured two pharmacists, two nurses and one ambulance from the district hospital at Sector 30 in Noida.

“In case of emergencies, we will transfer patients to the district hospital. We expect to start the pathology lab and X-ray machine in 15 days. The indoor and emergency services will start in two months,” said Dr AK Bhatt, director of in Greater Noida Medical University.

As per the detailed project report, the multi-specialty hospital will have more than 16 departments such as pulmonary, endocrinology, diabetic, neurology, nephrology, skin allergy, psychiatry, cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, etc. Besides, 16 modular operation theatres and eight intensive care units (ICUs) have also been built.

Considering its strategic location, near National Highway 91, a trauma centre has also been approved for the hospital.

The new hospital will be a boon for the residents of the twin cities and other nearby areas. Besides, it will reduce the burden of the District Hospital at Sector 30 in Noida — the sole government hospital in the Gautam Budh Nagar district.
