There were further tremors in the first family of the DMK on Tuesday as party president M Karunanidhi accused his elder son MK Alagiri of saying that his (Karunanidhi’s) younger son MK Stalin would die in three months – something Alagiri denied.
Alagiri, now under suspension from the party and with a strong base in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, said: “I’m shocked to hear the statement of the chief (Karunanidhi). All charges against me are false.”
However, Alagiri, a former Union minister, said he respected his father.
In the afternoon, Karunanidhi told reporters in Chennai Alagiri had been suspended for wishing the death of Stalin, the heir apparent.
“How can a father tolerate this? I don’t know why Alagiri nurtures hatred against Stalin. He came to my bedroom and complained about Stalin, using unsavoury words, and shouted in anger that he would die in 3-4 months. But as I am the party leader I tolerated that.”
Karunanidhi hinted that Alagiri, who is opposed to an alliance between the DMK and the Vijayakanth-led DMDMK for the Lok Sabha elections, might not be reinstated soon.
Asked whether Alagiri’s suspension would be revoked if he apologised, Karunanidhi said, “You have to ask him.”
He also justified the party’s decision to suspend some of Alagiri’s supporters in Madurai.

About Alagiri’s interviews in Madurai against the party, Karunanidhi said he had been talking to newspapers and TV channels against the executive council’s decision on the tie-up, resulting in undesirable political outcomes, forgetting that he was a member and also the party’s south zone organising secretary.
“How is it proper to give interviews and paste posters?” Karunanidhi asked.
On if the Congress would form an alliance with the DMK, Karunanidhi said, “I don’t want to boast that the Congress is coming to us. Forming an alliance is to be done without losing every party’s self-respect.”
